The unique geographic location of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) on the shores of the Red Sea
provides ample opportunity for biodiversity research and community engagement.

Biological diversity

Biological diversity means the variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems. As well as undertaking unique, cutting-edge academic research focused on the local environment, KAUST seeks to be a custodian for environmental well-being in the region.

Saudi Green Initiative

Following the recent announcement of the Saudi Green Initiative in the Kingdom, which aims to reverse the effects of climate change and to safeguard the natural environment, KAUST has committed to enhance those efforts through innovative science and technology. Several scientific groups are already exploring nature-based solutions, by taking advantage of Red Sea as a living laboratory.

Environmental Threats

Unfortunately, planet Earth’s incredible biodiversity is under threat. From birds and mangroves to coral reefs and rich land habitats, various aspects of the natural world are under immense stress and on the verge of
extinction.

Making KAUST Community A Living Laboratory Of Environmental Wellbeing

To support this mission,the Health, Safety and Environment Departmentplays a coordinating role in ensuring every faction of KAUST fosters a culture of biodiversity identification, conservation and appreciation. Many other research groups across the University are contributing to this effort.

LOGO STORY

The concept behind our logo is based on the representation of terrestrial and marine environments in a very abstracted way. Using shades of blue in a water drop element and green shades on a leaf element, bind together in a heart looking shape, our goal is to reflect the love and care for Biodiversity.
